Facebook: Harmful or Helpful for Job Searching?

February 21st, 2012 · No Comments · colleen wilson, comm361, mashable

In a recent Mashable article, a newly published study suggested that job performance can be directly linked to, even predicted by, Facebook profiles. After spending 10 minutes browsing a prospective employee’s profile, researchers rated each page on the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism). The study found a strong correlation on several traits related to a person’s Facebook profile and their performance in the office.

One of the more surprising outcomes was a statement from Don Kluemper, one of the authors of the study. According to Kluemper, Facebook users shouldn’t be worried about pictures on their profile that aren’t entirely professional. However, there are still boundaries. Pictures of casual drinking are welcome, but irresponsible pictures of crazy partying may be too much.

Journalists are finding ways to use Facebook to their benefit, perhaps reinforcing Kluemper’s study.

Though this study does find a correlation between job performance and Facebook profiles, Kluemper warns that the website should not be used to screen potential employees – though many businesses already do.
