Going Mobile

There are no industry standards in mobile journalism, choose what works best for you.

Good opportunities for mobile journalism:

-Court cases

-Important speeches

-Breaking news

-Public gatherings

-Sporting events

-Grand openings

Gearhead: a journalist who is out in the field telling multimedia stories using high end equipment

– laptops, internet connection, camera, video camera, tripod, audio recorder, headphones, microphone, cell phone

Light packer: a more traditional journalist who only occasionally reports and publishes directly from the field, carrying just enough equipment to get the job done.

– smart phone

Publishing Options

Mobile Microblogging: Using resources such as Twitter and RSS feeds, journalists can update minute to minute. FriendFeed is another resource for micropublishing.

Live blogging: Live blogging gives you the opportunity to update your posts as they happen, while expanding on the 140 character limit.

-Use a single post for all your updates. Time stamp additions so that readers understand the chronology of your story

Mobile Video: Using applications like Qik, Kyte and Flixwagon you can upload videos without an internet connections

Mobile Multimedia: Combine photos, text, audio and videos to create a packaged story.

Facebook: Harmful or Helpful for Job Searching?

February 21st, 2012 · No Comments · colleen wilson, comm361, mashable

In a recent Mashable article, a newly published study suggested that job performance can be directly linked to, even predicted by, Facebook profiles. After spending 10 minutes browsing a prospective employee’s profile, researchers rated each page on the Big Five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism). The study found a strong correlation on several traits related to a person’s Facebook profile and their performance in the office.

One of the more surprising outcomes was a statement from Don Kluemper, one of the authors of the study. According to Kluemper, Facebook users shouldn’t be worried about pictures on their profile that aren’t entirely professional. However, there are still boundaries. Pictures of casual drinking are welcome, but irresponsible pictures of crazy partying may be too much.

Journalists are finding ways to use Facebook to their benefit, perhaps reinforcing Kluemper’s study.

Though this study does find a correlation between job performance and Facebook profiles, Kluemper warns that the website should not be used to screen potential employees – though many businesses already do.

Human Wormholes

February 14th, 2012 · No Comments · colleen wilson

I recently read an article on NPR that really caught my attention. The author shared an anecdote about a man whose life spanned across so many decades that he was a direct link to history. Several more examples followed, modern day ties going as far back as the 1700s.

In March I’m going to Florida to visit my grandparents, primarily to interview them and help record their history. My uncle did a similar project for my great-grandfather, and our family now has a DVD of all the memories and tales Big Papa had to share. I thought I’d do the same with my Papa and Yaya, forever immortalizing their history on disc. Though my grandparents are young, only in their mid 70’s, I’m sure they’ll have some human wormhole stories of their own.

Microblogging: Write Small, Think Big

“Twitter is all about karma. The more good you put out there the more you receive,” said Sarah Marshall on Mashable.

Microblogging: the facet of blogging that works as an instant messaging journal. Messages are publishing in a more succinct format with links to other sources

-Why is it popular?

Microblogging is popular because of it’s easy accesibility and publishing

-Why is it important:

The importance of microblogging extends from it’s roots in text messaging, instant messaging, and internet relay chat. This new platform of microblogging is the next step in the progression.

Real Food

February 7th, 2012 · No Comments · colleen wilson, comm361

Three years ago, I rescued a runt piglet from certain death. The experience changed me in many ways, but the most visible of them has been my conversion to vegetarianism. At the time, my mom wrote it off as a phase, sure that I’d return to my Iowan roots and my meat and potatoes lifestyle, but I held fast. I struggled at first. I was suddenly on my own for all my meals, with nearly no knowledge of a healthy vegetarian diet. To cope, I ate the meat free foods I could scavenge around the house. Unfortunately, my diet became filled with processed snacks, empty calories, and junk.

Everything changed last summer when I started getting into cooking. The more I learned about how foods interact and their nutritional benefits, the more concerned I became about what I was putting in my boy. Processed foods, full of additives and chemicals, are far from natural. When I stumble upon videos like the one below, I know that I’ve made the right decision about the way I perceive and consume food.

Collaborative Publishing is Here to Stay

“The hunter-gatherer model of journalism is no longer sufficient. Citizens can do their own hunting and gathering on the internet. What they need is somebody to add value to that information by processing it–digesting it, organizing it, making it useful.” -Phil Meyer [Read more →]

Briggs Chapter 2

This chapter was in-depth look at blogging. I am currently interning at the Fairfax County Republican Committee blog, and found a lot of this information helpful. It’s easy to write posts, but building a follow base, keeping up day-to-day, and understanding the intricacies of writing online are a step above just writing.

Briggs Chapter 1

Chapter 1 went over the basics of how digital content works. I was happy to see Google Reader included, because I am a huge fan of the tool. The sections about writing HTML code were particularly interesting, and something that I definitely need to learn more about.
