“I Really Need You to Read This Article, Okay?” …My Reaction

I thought this article was an interesting perspective to the shift in journalism from print to online. I had always thought of the move to the internet as one driven by reader preference and changing technology. However, after reading this article, I realize my ignorance in that simplistic view.

The journalism industry, just like every other industry, has the ultimate goal of turning a profit. Another point that Achenbach made was about the journalist’s hunger for clicks on their stories, some sort of recognition for the hard work they’ve put in.

I’ve written for two papers and have no clue how many people have read my stories or how they reacted to them. I can see the appeal in being able to watch the ticker online to track every reader and gauge reaction to your work.

My Media Pyramid

January 31st, 2012 · No Comments · colleen wilson, comm361

My media pyramid has strong foundations in word of mouth. My newly created twitter has opened up lots of opportunities for click throughs to articles that I can browse. I often get distracted by interesting links in the articles I click from the news sources I follow and forget that I was even on twitter in the first place. I use Google Reader to follow my favorite RSS feeds so that I don’t have to visit each website individually. I check in every day to get my updates. In the bottom right hand corner is a picture of me and my dad. I like to talk to him to hear about news stories I may not have picked up on, and what his opinions are on certain things.
On the next level, I have Facebook and NPR. When I see interesting posts on Facebook, I like to look further into it and sometimes end up reading articles or Google searching. NPR is my homepage right now and I usually spend some time browsing the headlines before I carry on to other websites.
Finally, when I’m in the car I like to scan back and forth between WTOP and my favorite country music stations.
